Windows 10 has been, in perspective, one of Microsoft’s best recent operating systems, after the bittersweet taste of Windows 8 and 8.1 and the brilliance recovered with 7 after the Vista fiasco. The new system offers, in addition to a renewed window management and many visual changes, great performance improvements. However, Microsoft has recharged the system too much in terms of processes that are always running in the background, and it is often common to notice the very heavy computer, with a large damaged, disk usage.
If you have an SSD, it will be very difficult to notice these slowdowns, since it is very difficult to saturate your reading and writing rates in everyday tasks. With a traditional hard drive, it should also be difficult, but it is very common if you have one that the Task Manager of Windows show disk usage 100% and red. It crashes a lot, because sometimes both the CPU and RAM are barely being used, and yet the performance is poor. These are some tricks to speed up Windows 10.
Disable Superfetch and BITS
With the Superfetch function, the system tries to anticipate the next user action, for which it performs a file reload that in many cases is counterproductive, such as the one mentioned here. To deactivate it, you have to look for services in the Cortana search engine, and within the list that appears, click on the Superfetch properties. Once it opens, open the Startup type drop-down and check disabled. After that, apply.
In the same menu of Superfetch services, look for the option “Intelligent background transfer service” and instead of disabling, it is suggested to change the start type to Manual and apply. After restarting, the changes to accelerate Windows 10, in case of problems, will have to have taken effect.
Skype and Chrome, two of those responsible
If you have these two applications installed, reaching 100% disk usage is relatively common. To fix the part that depends on them, and accelerate Windows 10, it is best to go to Chrome’s advanced settings, and within the Privacy section, disable the option «Use a prediction service to load pages faster».
In Skype, in turn, you have to find the executable located in Program Files, called Skype.exe, and in its properties, press the Edit button on the Security tab, with the option of “All Application Packages” selected, and after that mark in the column Allow the writing hole.
